The Auckland Airport (IATA: AKL, ICAO: NZAA) was formerly called the Auckland International Airport and it is the largest airport in New Zealand. In 2011, there were a total of 14,006,122 passengers that passed through the airport for International and Domestic Flights. The airport is situated near Mangere which is close to 21 kilometers (13 miles) south of the Auckland City Center. Auckland Airport is one central hub for airlines such as Air New Zealand, Jetstar Airways and Virgin Australia.  This airport contributes close to $14 billion to the New Zealand economy and caters to over four million travelers annually. It is the fourth busiest airport in Australasia, however internationally, it has been rated as the second busiest airport behind Melbourne in 2011. It has been rated in the top three airports that handle 5-15 million passengers on yearly basis in the world. It also won the eighth best airport in 2011 at the World Airport Awards. The airport handles over 45 flights per hour using only a single runway.
